Separating Fact from Fiction
There has been a lot of discussion about a proposed cryptocurrency mining project in Jerseyville that could be served by MJM. As a member-owned cooperative, we believe our community deserves clear, accurate information. Four things to know about this proposed project from MJM’s perspective…
- MJM believes growth should pay for growth. Any large projects pay for all the power and infrastructure that they require. This ensures new customers strengthen, not strain, the system we all share. Before any project moves forward, MJM takes careful steps to protect co-op members.
- Potential member benefits matter. If approved, an 18-MW project could generate significant value that would support system maintenance and upgrades that benefit the farms, homes, and businesses served by MJM.
- No project moves forward without safeguards. New large-load projects must meet strict financial, reliability, permitting, and zoning requirements before any agreements are finalized. If a project passes local government permitting and zoning requirements, it may then move to the utility study stage, ensuring long-term capacity is available. If energy capacity is not available, the projects do not move forward.
- The Bitcoin project would be interruptible. During periods of high demand or grid stress, the facility could be powered down, limiting impacts on the electric system and helping protect reliability.
For nearly 90 years, MJM's responsibility has been to protect the interests of the farms, homes, and businesses we serve. That commitment remains unchanged today.
